Reminder for the Self-Employed: don't forget your Self-Assessment Tax Return, even if you are on “£0” income

October 1st, 2024

If you're self-employed, it's crucial to complete your Self-Assessment tax return, even if you earn nothing. Failing to submit by the deadline can result in penalties: an initial fine, followed by increasing charges based on further delays.

Registering as self-employed is straightforward, but it's easy to overlook that you're still registered if you change jobs or stop working for yourself. Remember, even if you have no earnings or are out of work, you're still required to file a Self-Assessment. Failing to do so leads to unnecessary penalties and charges.

If you're no longer self-employed, you can close or suspend your registration to avoid future obligations.

If you're unsure whether your self-employment is still active, want to appeal penalties, or need advice on completing the Self-Assessment, you can always contact HMRC directly on their Self-Employment Helpline at 0300 200 3310.
