5 common benefits myths we hear everyday, part 1

May 22nd, 2026

Every day in our work, we meet people who are unsure about what support they may be entitled to, often because of misinformation, stigma, or simply not knowing where to turn.

We want to challenge some of the most common myths we hear about benefits and welfare support, and share the facts that everyone deserves to know.

  1. MYTH: Only unemployed people can claim benefits.

FACT: Many people in work may still be entitled to support. Being employed doesn’t always mean financial security and getting support when you need it is your right.

  1. MYTH: Appealing a decision is pointless.

FACT: Many benefit decisions are changed after reconsideration or appeal.

  1. MYTH: I’m self-employed, I can’t claim.

FACT: Self-employed people may still qualify for support depending on circumstances.

  1. MYTH: If I have savings, I can’t get any support.

FACT: Savings can affect some benefits, but not all.

  1. MYTH: I was refused once, so I can never apply.

FACT: You can. Circumstances change. Decisions can also be challenged.
