5 common benefits myths we hear everyday, part 4

June 19th, 2026

One of the biggest misunderstandings about benefits is who may actually qualify for support.
Many people assume certain circumstances automatically make them ineligible, when that isn’t always true.

Here are 5 more common myths we hear:

  1. MYTH: If I’m expecting a lump sum of money (such as inheritance, back pay from a previous job, or a gift), I can’t claim anything.
FACT: One-off payments or money you are due to receive may affect some benefits, but it doesn’t automatically stop you from being entitled to support. It depends on timing, amount, and the type of benefit.

  1. MYTH: I own my home, so I won’t qualify for benefits.
FACT: Homeowners may still be entitled to certain benefits and financial support.

  1. MYTH: If I have a partner who works, I can’t claim.
FACT: A partner’s income may affect entitlement, but some households may still qualify for support.

  1. MYTH: If I work full-time, there’s no help available to me.
FACT: Some people in full-time work may still qualify for support depending on income and circumstances.

  1. MYTH: I need to be in debt before I can ask for help.
FACT: You do not have to wait until things get worse before seeking advice or support.
