5 common benefits myths we hear everyday, part 6

July 10th, 2026

Many people receive incorrect advice from others and forget that benefit entitlement is based on a range of factors that they may not be aware of.
The reality is that every situation is different and it’s always worth checking what help may be available.

Here are 5 more benefit myths we hear all the time:

MYTH: If I have a disability, I automatically qualify for financial support.
FACT: Eligibility depends on how your condition affects your daily life and ability to function, not just the diagnosis.

MYTH: If I move in with a partner or someone moves in with me, my benefits will automatically stop.
FACT: Living with someone can affect your entitlement, but it does not automatically end your support. You may need to report a change of circumstances, and your new situation will be assessed.

MYTH: You can’t get help if you are under retirement age.
FACT: Many benefits are available to working-age adults depending on income, circumstances, and needs.

MYTH: Benefits are the same everywhere and work the same way for everyone.
FACT: Entitlement depends on individual circumstances, and different types of benefits have different rules.

MYTH: If I receive a State Pension, I can’t access any other support.
FACT: People of State Pension age may still be entitled to additional support depending on their circumstances, such as housing-related help or disability-related benefits.
