Schools decide their own uniform policies, but they must consider the cost and affordability of uniforms for families.
From September 2026, schools in England must not require parents and carers to buy more than three compulsory branded uniform items. Secondary and middle schools may require up to four items if one of them is a tie.
Schools should make sure that second-hand uniforms are available and publish information about how families can access them.
If you cannot afford a school uniform or PE kit, contact your child’s school and ask what support may be available.
If you live in England, your local council may provide help with school uniform costs. Contact your local council to find out what support is available in your area.
A school uniform should never prevent a child from attending school. If you are experiencing financial difficulties, support may be available.
