Understanding the Benefit Cap

September 19th, 2024

The Benefit Cap limits the total amount of certain benefits that most working-age people can receive, even if their full entitlement would otherwise be higher.

The cap affects benefits like Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, and others, reducing the amount you receive if your total benefits exceed the cap.

Certain groups are exempt from the Benefit Cap, such as those receiving specific disability benefits.

You’re also not affected by the cap if you’re over State Pension age. If you’re part of a couple and one of you is under State Pension age, the cap may apply.

The exact cap amount depends on your location and individual circumstances. It's important to seek professional advice to understand how the Benefit Cap might affect your benefits entitlement, considering your specific situation.
